This means that the gears share the driving forces equally, but with a 4-planet hub, some of the gears are highly loaded and some are lightly loaded, until or unless the parts "wear in" enough after use. This situation is analogous to the 3-legged milk stool, which distributes loads equally on all three legs, while the 4-legged variety would not unless the legs are whittled or shimmed to prevent any wobble.2 This design feature also allows smaller gears to be used because all three will always share the load — presumably one reason Sturmey-Archer designers were able to reduce the size of the hub from the previous designs. Indeed, gear failures are not common with any Sturmey-Archer hubs, to my knowledge.


The first internal difference of note is that unlike the AW's 4-planet design, the SW uses three planet gears, a three-pronged driver , three pawls (at any one time), a 3-lobe clutch, etc.
Another useful feature of 3-point loading that the ring-shaped parts are self-centering under load. This is most notable in the SW's clutching parts: the dogs on the gear ring and the right hand pawl ring. These parts have 3 mating combinations possible, and using a rounded face, 3-point design ensures loads are evenly shared regardless of combination. Again, even load distribution is the goal.
