Bei einem Ansatz rotieren alle drei Elemente eines Planetensystems: Das Sonnenrad wird von einem zweiten Planetensystem vorwärts oder rückwärts gedreht. Einige Sturmey-Archer Naben mit engere Übersetzunsgbandbreite aus der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts bedienten sich dieses Systems, um Übersetzungen Nahe der 1:1 Übersetzung darstellen zu können. Man beabsichtigte, damit Rennfahrer und ambitionierte Freizeitfahrer zu begeistern. Daher boten diese Naben nur drei oder vier Übersetzungen, zogen aber gegenüber den [[Kettenschaltung]] am Markt den den Kürzeren, weil diese enge Abstufungen und gleichzeitig mehr Übersetzungen anbieten konnten.
