Alle aktuellen Drei-Gang-Modelle außer der Sturmey-Archer [[S3X]] Fixed-Gear-Nabe haben eine große Übersetzungsbandbreite mit großen Schritten zwischen allen Gängen. So wie die Hersteller gewöhnlich Dre-Gang-Fahrräder montieren, ist die direkte (1:1) Übersetzung zu niedrig für Überlandfahrten, um den höchsten Gang nicht völlig Nutzlos werden zu lassen. Eine Drei-Gang Nabe erfüllt Ihren Zweck deutlich besser, wenn man ein größere Ritzel oder ein kleineres Kettenblatt montiert, damit man den größten Gang für Überlandfahrten nutzen kann. Der kleinste und mittlere Gang sind dann besser für Beschleunigung und Bergauffahrten geeignet. Wenn die Trittfrequenz bergab zu hoch wird, kann man einfach rollen lassen.
